stop by her lovely blog here! I feel honoured to be here and will do my best to
entertain and hopefully I can be invited back sometime.
Today I thought that I would talk a little
bit about my love for the romance genre and why it is so much fun to write in.
I would first like to start off with a little story that I heard from a teacher
at the local community college where I live. We were talking about writing and
the romance genre in particular and she told me the following about one of her
recent students who happened to be a Gulf War veteran. She always assigns a
paper where her students a paper where they have to talk about their
relationship with reading and literacy.
He came up to her unsure what to write
about, so she asked what he liked to read. Sheepishly he told her romance
novels. He then went on to say that when he was stationed in Iraq he read
anything and everything that he could get his hands on, even though a lot left
him feeling down when he finished. There came a point where he had read almost
everything in camp so a nurse friend lent him some of her romance novels. At
first he scoffed, but there was nothing else to read and so he started one.
Turns out he loved them, in particular because many conflicts got resolved and
there was a happy ending that left him feeling good and hopeful, something that
really helped him considering the situation he was in.
I loved hearing that story and it hits on
one of the reasons I enjoy romance myself, it does take you away from your life
for a bit and usually ends on an up note. Now don't get me wrong, I read other
genres as well, even write a little horror myself now and then, but when I need
a pick me up, romance is where I go. Plus there is always so much to choose
from.
And that leads me to the other reason I
love romance so much, all the wonderful sub-genres that there are to read and
write in. I myself started out writing paranormal romance, but have since
ventured on to contemporary, mystery and my latest release, Taking Pleasure
Where You Can is my first historical romance set during WWII. I plan on doing
more historical and mystery pieces and I even have a sci-fi romance in mind!
What other genre would allow me to jump around like that and still have the
same publisher and readers? As a reader myself it also always gives me
something new and fun to try and I love that.
So there you have it, just a couple of the
reasons I think romance books and writers are so darn great and I am not saying
that because I am a said writer!

Kelly Ryan, aka Sheri Velarde, lives in New
Mexico with her fiancé and two dogs, and grew up with a fascination for all
things that "go bump in the night", so it is no wonder that she
turned to writing paranormal romance among other genres of romance. She is an
avid exerciser and gets some of her best ideas while on runs. She also has a bit
of a wild side, which only leads to inspiration for her writing.
Being an avid reader since an early age,
she has wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember. She has been
writing all her life, but only recently started to actually try to pursue her
dream of writing for a living.
